First, the basic concepts, fundamental principle and application background of adaptive control are briefly carried out. Some methods for real-time estimation are introduced as well as the choice of input signal guaranteeing the success of system identification. Two main approaches, self-tuning regulator and model-reference adaptive systems, are elaborated in details. For the former, according to the updating style of regulator parameters, the indirect self-tuning regulator and the direct self-tuning regulator are given. For the latter, the design of parameter adjustment based on the gradient method is discussed. Applications for the adaptive control in industrial process and ship steering are then illustrated. Finally, the discussion for the latest research development of the adaptive control is performed.
