The cytokine IL-2 is mainly produced by antigen-activated T cells and promotes the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of mature T and B cells as well as the cytolytic activity of natural killer (NK) cells in the innate immune defense.Natural human IL - 2 is a polypeptide of 133 amino acid residues, as the molecular weight is about 15 kD a glycosylated protein. There are three cysteine residues (Cys), located in 58, 105, and 125. Therefore posttranslational modifications include glycosylation and disulfide is must for activity.
IL-2 have double functions: 1. IL-2 can increase the activition of CTL, enhancing immunity. So we can use it to treatment of tumor. 2. IL-2 can promote the proliferation of Treg cells. So we can use it to treatment of autoimmune diseases. problms: Considerable efforts has been invested using IL-2 as a therapeutic agent for a variety of immune disorders ranging from AIDS to cancer. However, adverse effects have limited its use in the clinic. |
