1). Tegafur is a chemotherapy agent and has been used in the treatment of several common cancerous tumors, but it have severe drawbacks, neurological toxicity, [1] a short biological half-life, and poor aqueous solubility. [2]
2). 3-Thf-FU is less toxic than Tegafur. At a higher dose it strongly inhibits tumor growth, but at this dose it is also toxic to normal body growth of rats. [3]
3). In the 1920s, German biochemist Otto Warburg demonstrated that tumor cells produce copious amounts of lactate despite the presence of ample oxygen—Warburg effect. [4] He determined that cancer tissue consumes ten fold more glucose than normal tissue. [5, 6]
4). Glucose is transported to the intracellular medium mainly via facilitative glucose transporters (GLUTs). [7] Due to its main function, they are found to be involved in a broad spectrum of diseases including cancer and diabetes.[8] |
