Abstract:
This oral presentation is about the thesis proposal defense
Globally, 11% of the world’s population lack access to basic drinking water service, as defined by the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme as no more than a 30 minute round trip to collect water from an improved source. This proportion rises to 42% in sub-Saharan Africa (WHO and UNICEF, 2017). This indicated that Potable water accessibility is still a major challenge for most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and this problem will continue to increase if proper water resource management measures are not employed to address climate change impact which is one of the major causes of water scarcity in the world today. According to jarju, (2009) seasonal water scarcity occurs as a result of climate change, Population growth, high water demand to serve the touristic sector, irrigation requirements, growing commercial and industrial activities and changes in land use practices in the entire upstream of the Gambia River Basin, yet researchers has not done a proper study to understand climate change and groundwater hydrology in the Gambia. This thesis is aimed at determining the challenges caused by climate change on groundwater resources.
This proposal defense sets the stage for the thesis on assessing the impact of climate change on groundwater resources in the Gambia. |
