Zinc ion (Zn2+), which is the activator of nitrogenase in photosynthetic hydrogen production pathway, is crucial for hydrogen production by photosynthetic bacteria. However, publications on zinc ion addition during photo-fermentative hydrogen production process are limited. In this study, the effect of zinc ions on hydrogen production by photosynthetic bacteria was studied by adding different concentrations of zinc ions. Experimental results showed that the addition of zinc ion can effectively improve hydrogen production by photosynthetic bacteria. The optimal concentration of zinc ion in the solution for hydrogen production was 2mg/ml which increased total gas production and hydrogen production by 2.6 and 3 times, respectively. Addition of zinc ion solutions with higher concentrations (3-5 mg/mL) of zinc ion inhibited hydrogen production. |
