Desulfurization of flue gases from various industrial sources, especially thermal power plants, in a techno-econo-enviro manner is a demanding technology. In this work,the reactive absorption of SO2 from gas mixtures into ammonium bicarbonate aqueous solution was investigated experimentally in a bubble column reactor,The effects of the concentration of ammonium bicarbonate, the SO2 inlet concentration in gas mixture and the gas flow rate on the SO2 absorption were studied. Results showed that higher SO2 inlet concentration and gas flow led to shorter duration time of 100% SO2 removal rate and then a fast decline in SO2 removal rate. The duration time of 100% SO2 removal rate increased with ammonium bicarbonate concentration. The PH value of solution sharply fell as it is less than 6.15, correspondingly, the SO2 removal rate also decreased rapidly. A prediction model of the SO2 removal rate was developed by taking the chemical enhancement and the sulfite concentration in the liquid phase into account.
