Wei Chang An pills (WCA pills), a traditional Chinese
patent drug, have been widely used in clinical for many gastrointestinal
diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional diarrhea. The aim of
study was to demonstrate the protective effect of WCA on irinotecan (CPT-11)
induced intestinal damage in mice.In order to
illustrate the potential mechanism of WCA on mucositis, the effect of Houpo
(HP), the main herb in WCA, its major components magnolol (MG) and honokiol
(Hon) were conducted to demonstrate its efficacy. Irinotecan hydrochloride, as
known as CPT-11, is an effective and common drug for colon cancer patients. But
the intestinal toxicity limits its antitumor effect. Therefore, WCA was applied
to evaluate its efficacy on intestinal protective effect in CPT-11 treated CT26
tumor bearing mince. Co-treatment of WCA modulated the body weight loss, decreased
the severity of intestinal mucositis by improving histopathological parameters,
suppressing oxidative stress, regulating the inflammatory response to exhibit
its function in alleviating gastrointestinal toxicity induced by CPT-11, but
would not change the anti-tumor effect of CPT-11. |
