Commonly known as the tea tree, M. alternifolia has attracted the attention of many scientists due to its unique biological and chemical properties. Several thousand scientific publications, dozens of monographs, and books are evidence of its popularity. Essential oil or crushed leaves of plant are traditionally used to treat coughs and colds, and as an antiseptic for wound and skin treatment or throat infections.Early studies largely provided information about the broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity of M. alternifolia oil in vitro. The antimicrobial activity of essential oils of M. alternifolia was screened in vitro against bacteria. The oils showed a wide spectrum of antibacterial activity. Concentrations of 0.1–0.5% w/v of M. alternifolia reduced total microorganisms count of P. mirabilis and C. albicans. Bactericidal concentrations of M. alternifolia were 5% w/v for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecium and 8% w/v for S. aureus. |
