The isothiocyanates formed upon enzymatic cleavage of the sugar moiety from a glucosinolate often have anti-inflammatory action. Many of the 375 genera in this family,incuding Aethionema, can be used as herbs. Mos of Cruciferous plants can be used as food and medicine. According reference Aethionema armenum has been suggested that this genus may contain alkaloids other than calystegines, but none have been identified in it.
