Heavy metals contaminated soil has been increasing over the recent decade years and attracted wide public attention especially in mining, smelting, tanneries and the sewage irrigation areas.Heavy metals in soils may transport to water bodies, being uptake or adsorbed by aquatics, and directly uptake and accumulate in vegetables and food crops, decreasing plant quality and leading to instant or potential risks to animals and human beings. It is accepted by most researchers that silicon can ameliorate heavy metal toxicity in crops, while much more vegetable species should be considered to verify the functional mechanisms. And the efficiency of plant uptake of different Si based fertilizers in modulating plant physiological and biochemical responses should be further investigated. |
