Potentilla discolor Bunge, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, can commonly be found in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. It is locally known as “fanbaicao” and has a long history of clinical application and has a wide use for the treatment of malaria, diarrhoea, hematemesis, hemoptysis and ringeworm. It is reported that the main phytochemicals in Potentilla discolor are triterpenoids, flavonoids and tannins. Some studies have shown that extract have anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, anti-virus, anti-inflammatory activity and so on. Moreover, many people boil the leaves in water and drink the extract as a folk medicine for diabetes in the sourthern part of china. In rencent years, it is found that the whole plant of Potentilla discolor have been used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), because it can protect pancreatic β-cell on type 2 diabetes, decerase the blood glucose, and improve the insulin resistance in clinical research. |
